On the 22nd, I thought about the Shin character in Ezra Pound’s “Make it New” translation and the Taoist concept translated as “Tao Mind” or “Uncarved Block”
Uncarved Block: 樸
(Make it) New: 新
The Uncarved Block depicts a tree (木) and thicket (菐), or wood that is still in its natural state.
New depicts the opposite, a carving knife(辛) with a tree(亲) and the character for axe(斤). Or wood that is being altered.
