Telling Lies
“If you keep silence, we’ll kill you before the torture really begins.”1
This is the kind lie of the Good.
What do they mean?
"Don't let them see us. Don't tell them what we are doing -"
Words from the powerful and pathetic Board Members of Nova Express2, desperate for more time to conceal the lies that aren’t so kind, the ones that keep the whole thing going.
Cui bono?
In cases of demonic possession, who benefits?
Let’s break the dynamic down into a few major players.
The Family - The community in which the outbreak of possessions occurs
The Possessed - The individuals who are possessed, or declared as such
The Priests - The authorities who take control and attempt to remedy the situation
Every Family is a festering wound. Regardless of what glamours and salves are applied, no matter how beautified, there is an immense unconscious filled with sickening incest and blood curses waiting to weep into the world.
This generally occurs in ways Shakespeare understood perfectly. Bursts of irrational tragedy, orgasmic violence that leaves everyone involved ashamed, but relieved.
The possessed individual scapegoats (willing or not) take on all of that hidden darkness and proclaim it loudly. They are pressure valves on a totem pole. And while they are likely to die, they were able to relieve a profound pressure that weighed on them throughout their life in ecstatic bliss (up until the flames).
The Priests are able to reify their authority, through the demonic madness they assert the sinfulness of the community, and cure it only through sacrificial rites they provide. For a few lives and a bit of embarrassment they maintain power and keep the Totem upright.
You may have noticed the question that began this section has not been answered, cui bono?
Or if it has, it’s a rather boring answer: each of these players is part of a seemingly self sufficient dynamic.
It in fact follows the natural formula of IAO3.
But for the sake of curiosity, let’s ask again. Cui bono?
The Devil
“You can share my ambitions. I’ve got plenty of them, big ones -they make Leo’s look like dirt.”
-The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Philip K Dick
None of the players in the Possession Dynamic profit, they merely survive. Maintaining their paltry lot for a bit of time. Who thrives?
The Devils themselves.
The autonomous complexes4 that lay in wait within the festering wound, occasionally taking control of a weak link and wreaking havoc.
All human suffering is food for demons.
In fact, human families and communities exist primarily as farms, where the crop is Garmonbozia5.
Anyone who thinks must have thought “Why are things so fucked up?”
Why do we suffer so much?
Seen from this view, humans are the suffering animal. Our fate is Player in a Cosmic Theater (fortunately, it’s a comedy.)
As flies to wanton boys are we to th’ gods;
They kill us for their sport.
-King Lear
This was well known to the Greeks, who experienced their greatest wars as Divine Theater.
Each Devil, God, Djinn and Spirit wants a bit of our energy, and the exciting play of life we experience provides it.
Poor Latin
The scraps of Latin that were whispered in their ears they pronounced all wrong. The public said scornfully that the devils had not passed their Fourth Standard. The Capuchins, not in the least disconcerted, replied that if the demons were weak in Latin, they spoke Troquois to perfection and very fine Double Dutch.
-The Sorceress, Jules Michelet on the Nuns of Loudun
Devils speak nonsense with eloquence.6 (< Read this footnote)
Man is fortunate to have such noble reason and infinite faculty with which to apprehend the occulted mischief of these spirits.
There are always “tells”, always giveaways of the fraud.
It takes real fools to fall for it, but one need look no further than UFO and New Age communities to find people upholding Sacred Tomes writ in jabberwocky.
Memes
He was very bored Tryin' to create a next world war
He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
He said, "I never engaged in this kind of thing before
But, yes, I think it can be very easily done
-Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan
The entire harvesting operation is exhausting, and becoming kind of a bore. Why all this work just for a few hysteric girls and a few months of excitement?
Now new methods have been devised. The Internet is a perfect vector for memetic hysteria. So the same demons who moved Abigail and Betty now give Kym and Ashley TikTok borne ailments.
I’ll write more on Memetic Possession soon, but for now, check out my good friend Default Friend’s article!
PS
What is being called “Social Contagion” or “sociogenic illness” is Memetic.
